In a small town in the mid-west, it had been born, and swelled. There were new franchises appearing all over, small still, and hammering out the rites and precepts, but getting off the ground. Not long ago, had you been of a mind to rank the religions of the world by absurdity, some would score over others for certain assertions or practices, but all things considered, from a certain heathenish perspective, they balanced out. In all those widely practiced though, at least there seemed to be that essential distance, that boundary between the tangible and the ineffable, the here and the hereafter, that is respected.
